A senior Labour MSP has told wannabe party leader Andy Burnham to “shut up” amid speculation he plans to launch a bid to topple Keir Starmer. Michael Marra said people who are talking about leadership challenges are “neglecting” to do their job. Labour conference has been dominated by tension between the Prime Minister and Burnham, the mayor for greater Manchester. Burnham has not ruled out trying to replace Starmer and has aimed barbs in his direction. He said today there is a “climate of fear” preventing a proper debate in Labour and hit out at those calling for “simplistic statements of loyalty” to Starmer. At a fringe debate at the conference in Liverpool, Marra, who is Labour’s shadow finance spokesperson, was asked if Burnham would be a better PM than Starmer. He replied: “Frankly it is a distraction” “Anybody frankly who is concerning themselves with this kind of stuff at the moment is neglecting the job that we’ve got in front of us.” He added: “I think he should shut up.” This is a breaking news story – we’ll bring you updates, pictures and video as it happens.
