Senator seeks Office of Technology's relocation to former chancery property

Sen. Telo Taitague asked Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero to seriously consider relocating the Office of Technology to the former chancery property in Agana Heights, citing concerns over the agency’s current flood zone location and potential asbestos issues. Taitague, in a letter to the governor and Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio, said the office’s flood zone location puts GovGuam’s entire data infrastructure serving all essential government agencies at risk. Its current facility houses all of GovGuam’s major servers on Aspinall Avenue in Hagåtña. The potential for flooding also threatens a possible disturbance of asbestos, which would endanger the health of the office’s staff. “Should we lose access to these servers and the data housed within them, the impact on the Government of Guam and its people would be devastating,” said Taitague, chair of the legislative committee on technology. GovGuam purchased the former chancery property in Agana Heights in November 2024 for $2.3 million after it was placed on the market by the Archdiocese of Agana as part of its bankruptcy settlement. Two months ago, Adelup said GovGuam will be turning the former chancery property into a drug and alcohol abuse treatment and recovery center and other community outreach programs. Taitague, in her letter, highlighted the importance of providing government employees with safe working conditions and keeping government servers secured. “It is imperative that we provide OTECH with a safe and secure headquarters which will afford them the opportunity to maintain, develop, and expand their operations,” Taitague said in closing her address. Adelup has yet to respond to the request.
