An oversight hearing has been scheduled to take a closer look at the Guam Office of Veterans Affairs following concerns raised in a new audit by the Office of Public Accountability. Senator Sabrina Salas Matanane, who chairs the Legislative Committee on Health and Veterans Affairs, announced the hearing will take place Thursday, November 13 at 9am in the Guam Congress Building. The session will be streamed live on the Guam Legislature’s channel on YouTube. Matanane states, “The findings of the OPA audit highlight areas that directly affect the services and support our veterans deserve. Many of the issues identified in this audit have been longstanding and span multiple administrations. This hearing will give us the opportunity to have open discussions about the root causes and find real, lasting solutions that strengthen the delivery of services to Guam’s veterans.” The committee will review several key areas including staffing, claims processing, the Guam Veterans Registry, cemetery operations, office space, data management and security, and equipment needs. Senator Matanane adds that the goal isn’t just to respond to the audit findings, but to identify real, lasting solutions that improve how the government serves those who’ve served our island and nation.
