Senasa, Senasa, Senasa

News analysts spent the weekend giving more explanations on the diverse rackets that impacted the state government insurance plan, Senasa. The details of the complicity of Senasa officials with private companies and the diverse schemes and enormous volume of irregular transactions have been coming to the open for the first time. The Abinader administration first had denied the difficulties, attributing the financial deficit to the more than two million affiliates added at the start of the Abinader administration. Yet, now the evidence of the complicities with Senasa insiders is appalling.

Business and news analysts Esteban Delgado and Jairon Severino looked into several reasons behind the current Senasa deficit scandal. Delgado explained several of the schemes that have led to the financial collapse of the state health insurance plan that has more than seven million affiliates.

Among the reasons presented is that under the Abinader administration, Senasa contracted 70% of the services of its subsidized affiliates with private providers. Delgado mentioned how the switch in operation model benefited members of the Association of Private Clinics (Andeclip). Andeclip for years had complained the billions invested in public hospitals was causing the demise of the private clinic sector.

The government insurance plan covers millions who do not have formal jobs. Delgado explained that these people should have been receiving services in public hospitals, not private clinics at a higher cost to the government.

In another program, Edith Febles shares details of irregularities in a nutritional program sponsored by Senasa for the elderly.

Other newscasters, including Nuria Piera, Julissa Cespedes, Colombia Alcantara, Edith Febles, Ricardo Ripoll and El Piro have begun to reveal details of the complicity of drug store chain, pharma and medical supply companies.

This August 2025, President Luis Abinader replaced the director of Senasa, Santiago Hazim with Edward Guzman. Hazim was a presidential campaign director for Abinader into the 2020 election and was named to the position in August 2020 at the start of Abinader’s first term. It is now known he was or is a shareholder of the Grupo Medico Asociado, a medical insurance company.

A year ago, President Abinader replaced the Superintendent of Health and Labor Risks, Jesus Feris Iglesias with Miguel Ceara-Hatton, former Minister of Economy. Likewise, the President this week named highly-reputed lawyer Aura Celeste Fernandez to the National Social Security Council. The reputation of the Abinader government has been seriously impacted by the news coverage of the irregularities at Senasa.
