Selena Gomez‘s mother, Mandy Teefey, delivered an emotional speech at her daughter’s wedding to Benny Blanco before shutting down claims she was snubbed at the ceremony.
A source exclusively tells Us Weekly that Teefey, 49, and Blanco’s mother both spoke at the reception with “emotional speeches.” Gomez, 33, and Blanco, 37, tied the knot on Saturday, September 27, in Santa Barbara, California, with their loved ones in attendance.
“What a perfect celebration for the most kickass couple I know! The evening couldn’t have been more beautiful and perfect! Absolutely flawless,” Teefey, who shares Selena with ex Ricardo Gomez, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, September 28. “All my love to my beautiful daughter @selenagomez and to the greatest son-in-law @itsbennyblanco!!!”
She added: “It was a fairy tale come true and it was beyond heartwarming watching my father walk her down the aisle!!!”
After reports alleged that Teefey wasn’t happy she didn’t walk Selena down the aisle, the manager replied via social media, “This is ludacris!”
Selena previously opened up about her plans to involve her grandfather in her special day.
“I am looking to have a special dance with my papa,” the actress said on the “Table Manners With Jessie and Lennie Ware” podcast in April. “He never got a chance to walk my mom down the aisle because — good for my mom — she decided to go to Vegas and was like, ‘Whooo.’ It’s very cute that they did that, but I wanted to give my grandfather the opportunity to have that.”
Following Mandy’s split from Ricardo, she found love with now-husband Brian Teefey, with whom she shares 12-year-old daughter Gracie. Over the years, Mandy and Selena have been candid about the ups and downs they faced as mother and daughter.
“I blamed my mom a lot [for breaking up with my dad] because I wanted a family so bad,” Selena recalled during a June 2011 E! Entertainment special about her life. “I wanted to have my mom and dad together. I remember just being angry with my mom. I still feel really bad about that. Having me at 16 had to have been a big responsibility. My mom gave up everything for me and had, like, three jobs. She supported me, sacrificed her life for me.”
Mandy and Selena’s relationship took a particularly difficult turn when the singer entered a psychiatric facility in 2018 for mental health treatment.
“They called me and wanted to know what my daughter was doing in the hospital with a nervous breakdown. She didn’t want anything to do with me. I was scared she was going to die,” Mandy recalled in Selena’s 2022 documentary, My Mind and Me. “You hang on as tight as you can and try to help them with their treatment and that’s the hardest thing to do — to then go to bed and hope that they wake up the next day. … It’s a miracle she got out, but there’s always a fear it’s going to happen again and that hurt us so much.”
More recently, a second source told Us that Selena is “in a very healthy place” after she has had “to distance herself” from her mother “many, many times in the past 10 to 15 years for various reasons.”
“They have been through so many ups and downs, and that instability left Selena feeling lost at times,” the insider continued, adding that Selena is “finally in a place where she feels grounded. [She has] removed a lot of toxicity from her life.”
