GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Magellan Development Group, the Chicago firm enlisted by the DeVos and Van Andel families to develop a large-scale residential and commercial project in downtown Grand Rapids, has completed a host of high-end, high-rise developments across the U.S.
Here’s a look at some of the firm’s work:
The St. Regis Chicago
The 101-story tower, the third tallest building in the city, was built at 363 E. Wacker Drive, where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan. Featuring a wave-like design, the building boasts 393 for-sale housing units and 192 hotel rooms.
Construction of the building, whose price tag is listed at $1.03 billion, started in the third quarter of 2016, and its first residential units opened in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to Magellan’s website.
Aqua: Chicago
Featuring “fluid contours” inspired by Lake Michigan, Aqua is an 87-story building near the Chicago lakefront. It features 262 condos, 475 apartments, nine townhomes, 334 hotel rooms and two ballrooms, and 60,000 square feet of office and retail space, according to Magellan.
The building, 225 N. Columbus Drive, cost $471.3 million to develop. Construction kicked off in 2007, and the building opened to its first tenants in 2009.
Lakeshore East: Chicago
One of its marquee projects is Lakeshore East, a 28-acre, $4 billion mixed-use neighborhood, adjacent to Millennium Park, Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Lakeshore East has 4,950 residences, 1,500 hotel rooms, retailers, offices, an elementary school and is the “largest downtown development in any major U.S. city,” the firm says.
Construction on the development started in 2002, and its total price tag is listed at $4 billion by Magellan.
Sienna at The Thompson: Austin, Texas
Completed in late 2020, the 32-story building at Brazos Street and E. 5th Street includes 411 hotel rooms, 331 apartments, and ground-floor retail space, according to Magellan’s website. The development’s price tag is listed at $294.7 million.
W Nashville: Nashville, Tennessee
The W Nashville is a “premier upscale lifestyle luxury hotel” featuring 346 rooms. The W Hotels brand is part of Marriott’s portfolio. The property was developed for $191 million, with construction starting in the fourth quarter of 2018 and wrapping up by the fourth quarter of 2020, according to Magellan’s website.
Prospect Union Square: Somerville, Massachusetts
Located outside of Boston, Prospect Union Square is a 450-unit apartment community. Construction started on the development in 2021, with initial occupancy occurring in the third quarter of 2023, according to Magellan.
The development includes 18,069 square feet of retail space.
The cost of the project is listed by Magellan at $227.8 million.
Cirrus and Cascade: Chicago
The 47-floor Cirrus building at 211 N. Harbor Drive features 350 for-sale condos. Located adjacent to the Chicago River and Lake Michigan, the building features “indoor and outdoor pools, spa and massage rooms, state-of-the-art fitness center, a wine cellar and tasting room, screening room, kids club, lounge, demonstration kitchen, and much more,” Magellan’s website says.
The building’s first units opened in early 2022, and the project’s price tag is listed by Magellan at $337.3 million.
The 37-story Cascade building is located adjacent to Cirrus at 445 E. Waterside Drive. It features 503 luxury apartments, and its amenities include “an expansive outdoor deck complete with grills, a show kitchen, an indoor media room, and study rooms,” according to Magellan.
The building, which opened in the third quarter of 2021, cost $210.5 million, the firm says.
