The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SEDAT Consult, Patricia Abena Kissi, has urged human resource professionals to align their people management strategies with business goals to drive sustainable organisational growth. Speaking at the fourth edition of the SEDAT HR Conference in Kumasi, she said many organisations still perceive HR departments as cost centres rather than strategic partners. “If the HR director is not aligning the people strategy with the organisational goals, then the impact of HR on the business will not be felt,” Kissi said. “HR professionals must know where their organisations are headed and ensure that the people within have the skills and potential to drive that growth.” She added that organisations could learn from international and multinational companies that have succeeded by prioritising their workforce and creating systems that value people as key drivers of growth. “Globally, the best-performing companies are those that treat their employees as their greatest assets. They invest in continuous training, engagement, and development platforms that allow people to grow and contribute effectively,” she said. Kissi encouraged Ghanaian employers to adopt similar models that promote staff engagement, training, and respectful workplace cultures, describing employment as a fair exchange of value, not charity. She also called on HR practitioners to embrace technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in their operations to enhance efficiency while maintaining human oversight. “AI has come to stay, but professionals must understand how it works. It should support decision-making, not replace human reasoning,” she cautioned. “HRs must verify information generated by AI tools before implementation.” As part of her address, Kissi expressed support for the government’s proposed 24-hour economy initiative, describing it as a viable policy for boosting productivity and creating jobs — provided the right systems are implemented. “The 24-hour economy is a good idea. It can work if we strengthen transportation, security, and other support systems to make working at night safe and convenient,” she said. She further urged government agencies to allow existing public sector structures and policies to function effectively, free from excessive political interference, to promote professionalism and accountability. The SEDAT HR Conference, themed “HR for Sustainable Growth: Aligning Strategy with Business Success,” brought together HR professionals, business leaders, and entrepreneurs across the Ashanti Region to share ideas and explore modern approaches to people and organisational development. A panel discussion centered on employing AI in HR practice.
