Second man indicted in Zablan Beach shooting

An Oahu grand jury Tuesday indicted a second 19-year-old man on a charge of second— -degree attempted murder in the Sept. 6 shooting of a 17-year-old boy in Nanakuli.

Chystyn Williams–Aipoalani, who was also shot during the incident, was indicted Tuesday on the attempted murder charge along with first-degree robbery, and two counts of carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Kaison Kaholo, also 19, was indicted Friday on the attempted murder charge as well as carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the death of Kamakea Iaea, 17, of Waianae, who died of a gunshot wound to the head on Sept. 8.

On that same day, police said the boy was declared brain dead and the case was reclassified to second–degree murder.

However, prosecutors sought and obtained second–degree attempted murder indictments. The Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office said prosecutors charge the highest offenses that can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt with the admissible evidence that is available.

Whether the defendants are convicted of either second–egree murder or attempted murder, the penalty is the same — life with the possibility of parole.

According to the indictment, both men are subject to extended sentencing if convicted of any of the felony offenses. That could mean life without the possibility of parole.

According to a court document establishing probable cause, police officers responded to multiple gunshots at 2:30 a.m. Sept. 6 in the parking lot of Nanakuli Zablan Beach Park off Laumania Avenue.

They found a juvenile male lying on the street with a gunshot wound to the left side of his head.

Williams-Aipoalani was also shot in the right side of his head.

Kaholo told police they went to the park to meet Williams–Aipoalani’s friends. The two approached to where Williams-Aipoalani was talking to a male seated inside a Toyota Camry and Kaholo said he heard a gunshot.

The male and Williams- Aipoalani shot several times at each other, he said.

Kaholo said he then got out his handgun and shot once at the Camry.

He said he then drove Williams-Aipoalani to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and dropped him off.

He said he gave both of their guns to a homeless man at Sewers beach at Lualualei Beach Park.
