Second Buckie High incident in 24 hours was over ‘possible drugs misuse’, police reveal

Police have revealed new details of an incident which saw Buckie pupils kept in class for “safety and safeguarding” reasons.

Officers were called out to Buckie High School twice within the space of 24 hours last week.

Now, a Police Scotland spokesperson has confirmed that the second incident, on Wednesday, September 10, was related to “possible drugs misuse” on the school grounds.

Police learned of the incident at around 9.15am and attended the school, the spokesperson added, but after making enquiries recovered no drugs.

That day, rector Jemma Playfair had emailed parents and carers to confirm that officers visited the school to “support with an incident taking place outside of the school building, but on school premises”.

She also rejected “inaccurate details and rumours circulating within the local area and on social media” which had led parents to make calls about “a knife incident at the school” which had not taken place.

“However, there was an ongoing incident outside of the school building and to ensure pupils safety and safeguarding for all we extended period 1 into period 2,” the email added.

“This was to ensure that the incident had been resolved fully for break time.

“At no point…was there any risk to pupils and learning continued to be delivered with almost all pupils fully unaware of the situation ongoing.

“The senior leadership team acted swiftly in order to ensure safety for all with the support from Police Scotland.”

The Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.15am on Wednesday, 10 September, 2025, we received a report regarding concerns of possible drugs misuse in the grounds of a school in Buckie.

“Officers attended and enquiries were carried out alongside our education partners.

“No drugs were recovered.

“Suitable advice and assistance was given.”

A spokesperson for Moray Council said: “A Moray Council spokesperson said: “We’re aware of heightened behaviour at Buckie High School instigated by a small number of pupils who have been identified.

“We continue to work with partners, pupils and staff to highlight unacceptable behaviour and local police officers have attended the school to work with staff to tackle any anti-social behaviour that may present among pupils.

“Our thanks to Buckie High School staff, who worked together to de-escalate the incident and continue to support pupils to tackle unacceptable behaviour.”
