Celtic newboy Sebastian Tounekti made a flying start to life in Glasgow with a man of the match display in Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 win against Kilmarnock. The winger sealed a deal worth around £5.5million on deadline day from Swedish top tier side Hammarby after Brendan Rodgers saw initial efforts to land the Tunisia international thrown out. While the rest of his teammates struggled to break down firm Killie resistance, Tounekti, 23, was a livewire throughout and linked up well with fellow summer recruit Marcelo Sarrachi down the Hoops’ left. Celtic went onto win the game at the death with a spot kick from Kelechi Iheanacho but Tounekti received warm applause from the travelling support in East Ayrshire when he was replaced with two minutes remaining. Tounekti had only arrived in Sweden back in February after previous spells in Norway with Tromsdalen, Bodo/Glimt, Haugesund and Ranheim as well as a brief stint in the Netherlands at Groningen where he failed to make an appearance. The tricky wide man enjoyed his breakthrough season with Hammarby by chipping in with three goals and five assists in 27 matches and boss Kim Hellberg believes the amount of work done to help Tounekti accelerate his individual development will stand him in good stead after moving to Parkhead. Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen , he said: “It’s the environment here for six months of Martin (Sundgren, interim coach), David (Selini, assistant) and “Dogges” (Douglas Jakobsson, assistant) 500 individual hours of video with him and being able to work with him to be able to play the way we want to play. “So to think that players should be able to come in now and be able to do it right away when you sign players from lower levels, I find that hard to see. “Then there are qualities that mean that they will contribute in a damn good way, and I think he will.” Tounetki’s debut at Rugby Park impressed his manager Rodgers, who said: “He’s brilliant. He has that physicality and speed. “He can do everything really and he plays with joy, which is what it is about and we’ve been looking for that quality.” Follow Record Sport on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond.
