Since 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has tackled several beloved heroes and villains from the world of the comics on the big and small screens. As multiple actors have joined the MCU timeline over the last couple of years, the journey may soon be over for a huge fan-favorite. During his recent appearance on the Stronger Podcast, Sebastian Stan got candid about his future with Marvel Studios and how long he sees himself playing Bucky Barnes. The Academy Award-nominated star stated, “I have to try to offer something different than before." Stan continued, "And I’ve never favored one role over another. The Marvel stuff, I’ll always, till the end of time, [feel it] really helped me grow as a person and helped me grow as an actor and it taught me relationships." The Falcon & The Winter Soldier co-lead brought up the key aspects of having worked with stars such as "Robert Downey [Jr.] and Scarlett [Johansson] and all these people I looked up to." While to him "it was a business. It was a family and it gave me a sense of belonging, and it’s always there for that," Stan stressed that his MCU legacy "was only the step one for me.” The actor was last seen on the big screen in the MCU as part of the Thunderbolts* movie cast. Stan first joined the superhero franchise in 2011 when he brought Bucky to life in Captain America: The First Avenger during Phase 1. Bucky's MCU timeline includes appearing in the entire Captain America trilogy, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, while also having cameos in Black Panther and Captain America: Brave New World. On March 26, 2025, Stan was one of the many stars revealed to be part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast during Marvel Studios' surprise live-stream for the Phase 6 installment. Principal photography wrapped on September 19, 2025. It's unknown if Stan's Bucky will be part of the Avengers: Secret Wars cast, as the Phase 6 finale has yet to begin principal photography. But with the final movie in The Multiverse Saga set to reset the MCU, 2027 could potentially be the last time many long-time stars of this franchise portray their respective characters.
