It’s officially the postseason for girls’ flag football, and three Santa Clarita Valley schools will be represented in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section playoffs. Here’s a look at this week’s matchups: West Ranch vs. Chaparral This season’s Foothill League champions are going on the road to begin the playoffs, and the Wildcats will start pursuing their title aspirations at Chaparral. The Wildcats finished the season with a 13-3 record and 12-2 in league play, as West Ranch swept Hart in the regular season series for the league crown. The Chaparral Pumas accumulated an 8-4 record throughout the season and tallied a 2-3 Southwestern League record. The Wildcats enter the first round with plenty of momentum behind them as the team has won seven out of its last nine and appears to have a favorable matchup over the Pumas to advance to the next round. The Wildcats play Tuesday at Chaparral with the game set to begin at 5 p.m. Royal vs. Hart Despite finishing second in the Foothill League, the Hawks will host a playoff game in the first round. The Hawks will host the visiting Royal Highlanders. Hart finished the year with a 17-8 record and 12-2 in league play and faces a Highlander team that was 3-8 overall and tallied a 3-5 record in the Coastal Canyon League. With the Hawks playing at home, the Highlanders will have to travel from Simi Valley to Newhall for the game, a tough matchup for Royal as they’ve been outscored 119-201 by their opponents in the regular season. The Hawks will host Royal on Tuesday at Hart High School with the game set to begin at 6 p.m. Castaic vs. Highland The third team from the Santa Clarita Valley to represent the Foothill League in the playoffs is first-year Castaic as they finished fourth in the league standings for a berth. The Coyotes finished in the middle of the pack in the Foothill League that has eight teams, with an 8-6 league record. The team will begin its first-year playoff appearance on the road in Palmdale at Highland High School. The Bulldogs finished the season with an overall record of 11-12 and a 10-3 Golden League record. It looks to be a tough matchup for the Coyotes as Highland has outscored its opponents 444-349 and Coyotes will need to contain the Bulldogs’ offense to win the game on the road. The Coyotes play on Tuesday at Highland with the game set to begin at 5 p.m.
