Scottland deny claims of alleged attempt to buy league title from Simba Bhora

HARARE – Premier Soccer League (PSL) title contenders Scottland FC have dismissed social media allegations suggesting they intend to buy the league title from Simba Bhora, a club also sponsored by Scottland owner Scott Sakupwanya.

The speculation emerged after Sakupwanya donated US$100,000 to Simba Bhora to assist with preparations for their CAF Champions League clash against Nsingizini Hotspurs, scheduled for Sunday evening at Francistown Stadium.

Following the donation, social media users alleged that the gesture was a covert attempt to influence the title race, with Simba Bhora currently topping the standings with just six games remaining in the 2025 season.

However, Scottland has issued a statement denying the claims.

Reads the statement: “We have been alerted to social media claims that Scottland FC president, Pedzai Sakupwanya has given Simba Bhora FC US$100 000 “disguised as CAF Champions League sponsorship.

“The insinuation from some sections of social media is that it is a way of buying the PSL title race, which is currently led by Simba Bhora.

“It is ironic that we actually played Simba Bhora on MatchDay 28 on Saturday and were disappointed with the outcome, which kept us in second place.

“If we wanted to manipulate the PSL title race, we could have used that game and go top of the league table.

“Simba Bhora have an existing sponsorship deal with Betterbrands, which has been there since the start of the season as seen on their kit.

“Part of the package includes ensuring that, as Zimbabwe’s representative in Africa, they are adequately resourced for their participation in the CAF Champions League.

“This has nothing to do with Scottland FC and the ongoing PSL title race which, at this stage, involves up to four other teams. We stand for Fair Play and will fight for the league title on the field of play.

“At the same time we wish Simba Bhora all the best in their CAF Champions League campaign as they fly the Zimbabwe flag,” ends the statement.

Scottland has long faced suspicions of match-fixing since their days in the Northern Region Soccer League, although no official reports have been submitted to the relevant authorities.

Their promotion to the top-flight league was met with strong criticism from football fans, who allege that they unfairly edged out their rivals, MWOS.
