Scots boxing star Aaron Sarwar on aiming for world titles - and living up to hype

One of Scotland's top youth boxers is setting his sights on ring stardom. Teenage sensation Aaron Sarwar is soaring through the amateur ranks as one of Europe's fastest rising talents. The 17-year-old heads for Sweden next week bidding to retain the coveted 'Prince of the Ring' title he won against 700 other fighters last year. But the Killie kid admits even bigger goals lie on the horizon as he bids to become the next big Scots boxing talent. Aaron, who boxes for the Northwest club based in Onthank, graduated to the national setup after just his seventh bout with talent scouts believing he can go all the way. He said: "I did karate for eight years before taking up boxing when I was 13. I loved it straight away and had my first fight within a few months. "I've now racked up 51 fights in four years and box for Scotland full time. I want to make it to the top and win world titles - and I believe that I can. "I won the British championships for the second time back in June against one of England's top boys and I want to keep the progress going now." Aaron insists early comparisons to former Olympian and world champion, Amir Khan, do not faze him with confidence high he can emulate some of the sport's biggest names. The former Kilmarnock Academy pupil said: "That comparison is something I get a lot due to our style and speed being quite similar. There's no doubt he's a big inspiration for me. "I'd have loved to take part in the Commonwealth Games next year but I miss out by two months due to my age. "But there's the Youth Olympics which I'll aim to be part of with Team GB. That's a big goal for now. "The coaches here are always pushing me and the key thing is we're part of one big team." Former boxer Euan Strachan, who is now one of Aaron's coaches at Northwest, said: "From the moment he came through the door, you could tell he was something different. "His ability is natural but it's the mindset that puts him where he is - he believes he will go all the way and is the hardest worker we've ever seen here. "For a 17-year-old, he's already boxed to a very high level and competes internationally all the time for Scotland. He drives standards in the rest of the gym and is a fantastic role model for the youngsters we have here. "We've had Scottish champions in the past and a couple of British champions, but the speed with which Aaron is risising through the ranks really sets him apart and he has the potential to go all the way."
