Scotland in 1962: Here are 23 remarkable pictures of Scottish life 63 years ago - from celebrities to sports

There was plenty going on in the world in 1962 – the year of the Cuban Missile Crisis when the planet was on the brink of nuclear war. It saw the death of Marilyn Monroe, the first American orbital space flight by John Glenn, the first live transatlantic TV broadcast, and the invention of the cassette tape. In Britain, The Beatles released their first single Love Me Do, Sean Connery played James Bond for the first time in Dr. No, and University Challenge made its debut on the BBC. Meanwhile, in Scotland, Rangers won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup with a 3–2 win over Dynamo Moscow in Barcelona, the school-leaving age was raised from 15 to 16, and comedian Frankie Boyle was born. Here are 23 pictures from our archives to take you back to Scotland in 1962.
