The "happiest places" in Scotland have been named. Coming in at number one on the list is a small town that is known as a 'gateway to the Highlands'. On Monday, October 27, Furniturebox published a list of the top 75 locations for happiness in the UK. The experts surveyed 5,000 people across the nation, with respondents asked about factors such as green space, quality of schools, affordability of housing, and access to quality pubs, restaurants, independent shops, and attractions. Coming in at number one for Scotland on Furniturebox's list is Callander in Stirling. The town placed eighth on the overall UK-wide roundup. Callander, which is is situated on the River Teith, is a popular holiday town amongst tourists exploring the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and the Highlands. The vibrant town is also home to a range of charming tearooms and cafés, such as Deli Ecosse and the Ben Ledi Coffee Company. Meanwhile, top restaurants in Callander include The Old Bank Restaurant and The Lade Inn. There are also many lovely shops dotted around Callander, selling a wide range of goods and trinkets. Mhor Bread and Store is one of the top bakeries in the area, while King's is a popular secondhand bookshop. Meanwhile, the second-happiest place in Scotland according to the experts is Portobello in Edinburgh. The coastal suburb lies around three miles east of the city centre and faces the Firth of Forth. Portobello is best known for its beach, where people across Edinburgh and beyond can often be seen when the sun shines. However, the suburb is also home to a wide range of trendy cafés and independent stores. Coming in at number three on Furniturebox's list is Aberfeldy in Perthshire. The small market town is situated along the picturesque River Tay, and is a popular site for hiking and other outdoor activities. As reported by the Daily Record, Aberfeldy is famous as the site of the Birks of Aberfeldy. The spectacular trail was made famous by a poem from Robert Burns, and offers magnificent views of the Falls of Moness. Rounding out the top five happiest places to live in Scotland on the experts' list are Arbroath in Angus and Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. The former features long sandy beaches and a historic harbour, while Stonehaven is a popular coastal resort renowned for its seaside views and annual Hogmanay fireballs ceremony. Following behind on the roundup are Dunkeld in Perthshire, Bonnyrigg in Midlothian, and Prestwick in Ayrshire, in sixth, seventh, and eighth place respectively. Completing the list of 10 are Gourock in Inverclyde and Dumfries in Dumfries and Galloway. Elsewhere, Norwich was named the happiest place to live in the whole of the UK.
