Scientific temper, critical thinking a constitutional responsibility, says Speaker

Speaker of the Kerala Assembly A.N. Shamseer on Friday pointed to an urgent need to promote scientific thinking and rationality in the present Indian context, “where pseudoscience and superstitions are often encouraged”. Speaking after inaugurating the State-level Science and Environmental Awareness Campaign organised by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) as part of the 38th Kerala Science Congress, he said fostering scientific temper and critical thinking is a constitutional responsibility. He expressed concern over deliberate efforts to promote unscientific beliefs, even with the support of top national leadership. “We live in a time when even mathematical concepts are being distorted with superstitious ideas. Unfortunately, scientific awareness in Kerala, too, seems to be declining. When science is sidelined, the nation regresses,” he cautioned. The event was held at the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom.
