School offers free fourth-term to ease parents’ burden

A private school at Forari in east Efate is once again offering free fourth-term education to ease parents’ financial burdens. Principal of Rongdal School, Markson Nipik, he wants to see all children attend school without worrying about school fees. “This year marks the fourth year I have offered free education in the fourth term,” he said. “I don’t want any student to be suspended or withdrawn from school because of school fees.” My heart is for the children. I don’t want to see any child walking around not going to school because their parents can’t afford the fees. Our children are the nation’s future — maybe one day one of them will become a great leader.” The private school has been operating for 17 years since establishment in 2009. Since its founding, the principal has been driven by a vision to ensure every child in Vanuatu has access to education regardless of their family’s financial status. To sustain his initiative, Mr. Nipik has built an innovative model that integrates education with agriculture. He proudly calls it ‘Farming plus market sales equals Rongdal School.’ “Farming is the engine room of the school,” he explained. “I spend most of my time on the farm because that’s what supports our students’ learning. If parents cannot afford to pay school fees, we work together — they help plant, we sell the produce, and the money goes to keep the school running.” Despite operating without any help from the government, Nipik remains hopeful that one-day support will come to help him expand. “If I have more classrooms, I can declare free education for half a year or maybe even a full year,” he said. “I believe in what we do together — unity is our vision. As citizens of this nation, we need to train our children because they are our future.” The school offers classes from kindergarten to Junior Secondary level, emphasizing both academic learning and practical skills through farming. Nipik’s motto, ‘Pray and Work’, reflects his deep faith and determination to provide opportunities for all children in Vanuatu. “I don’t worry about money or loans. I believe in faith, hard work, and community unity,” he said. “Every child deserves a chance to go to school — I don’t want anyone left out.”
