LOS ANGELES (KABC) — In today’s shaky economy and labor market, you may be trying to find ways to earn an extra buck or land a new, better paying job.
But now the Federal Trade Commission is sending out a warning about random text messages that promise new employment opportunities.
According to new data from the FTC, job and employment scams are on the rise this year.
In fact, you may have received a message that comes out of the blue and promises a great paid opportunity – as long as you reply “yes.”
FTC data shows that in the first half of 2025, more than 235,000 text message scams were reported in the U.S., resulting in $342 million in losses.
In quarter one of this year, the FTC says there were about 29,000 reports of job or employment text scams.
With worries about the economy and troubling monthly jobs reports, the FTC says more people may fall for these scams.
“They will say things like they’re a recruiter from a well-known company,” said Terri Miller, a consumer education specialist with the FTC. “But there’s always going to be this ask that you reply with personal information or financial information to pay you… What the scammer really wants is to steal your money or your identity.”
So what should you do if you receive a text like this? The bottom line is do not reply.
Research the phone number as others may have reported it. Also, search the company to see if it actually exists. Even if it sounds like the real deal you can always show a friend or family member and get their opinion.
The FTC asks that you report the messages if you get them.
