Ahead of the Diwali festival, the Supreme Court on Thursday banned the sale of any crackers in Delhi-NCR, including green crackers. Meanwhile, SC permitted green crackers’ manufacturers to continue their production. The matter was heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai. “We permit manufacturers who have the permit for green crackers by NEERI and PESO but same shall be subject to undertaking that by next date they should not sell any crackers in the Delhi NCR area,” CJI said.Amid rising concerns on pollution in Delhi-NCR, he added that the apex court cannot impose an ‘absolute ban’ on manufacturing and selling of fire crackers, since the Union has also not suggested a nation-wide ban.In November 2024, the capital’s air pollution hit a dangerous peak, recording an average AQI of 494, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), when residents woke up to an alarming sight with as dense smog blanketing the city.Live EventsOn Thursday, Aam Aadmi Party slammed the BJP-led Delhi government. “I also want to ask them if they would criticise the cracker ban imposed by the Supreme Court now?,” AAP Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj said.”Kapil Mishra, who is now a minister in the Delhi government, used to say that he would burst crackers.
