SC Aquarium offers free admission to furloughed workers

CHARLESTON — As the federal government shutdown continues to leave furloughed employees without a paycheck, one Lowcountry attraction is offering free tickets. The South Carolina Aquarium will waive admission for federal employees and up to three guests from Nov. 6-12 to support families impacted by the shutdown. This offer includes active military personnel who are affected as well. The federal employee must be present and show a federal ID at the gate. This offer is available in-person only and cannot be redeemed online. “Federal employees do so much for our communities, so we wanted to do something during this time of uncertainty. We hope that a visit to the Aquarium is a great opportunity to rest, recharge, and reconnect,” a spokesperson for the aquarium said. On the heels of its 25th birthday, the South Carolina Aquarium more than doubled the size of the previous hands-on touch tank. The extra room allowed the attraction to add a wider range of marine life, such as Atlantic stingrays, horseshoe crabs, chain dogfish, sea urchins, hermit crabs, peppermint shrimp, sea stars and other coastal native species. Other Lowcountry restaurants and attractions are offering some relief to furloughed workers. Terrace Theater is offering free popcorn to furloughed workers, Ruby Sunshine and El Jefe Texican Cantina have advertised free meals for those affected and Charleston Sports Pub is offering free kids’ meals.
