SBCA operation against dangerous, illegal buildings continues

KARACHI: Sindh Building Control Authority continues its operation against dangerous and illegal buildings in the city as part of a sustained campaign to safeguard lives and ensure urban safety. The SBCA has intensified its efforts to demolish dilapidated and unsafe structures across the city under the directives of Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and the supervision of SBCA Director General Muzzammil Hussain Halepoto, says an official statement on Friday. Earlier this month, the Authority launched a province-wide survey of dangerous and illegal buildings, followed by orders for their immediate demolition throughout Sindh. The operation aims to prevent potential loss of life and restore public confidence in building safety and urban management. Director General Muzzammil Hussain Halepoto said Sindh Building Control Authority’s top priority is to protect citizens from the risks posed by unsafe and unauthorized structures. “No citizen should lose their life due to a collapsing building. Our teams are taking decisive steps to ensure compliance and safety,” he said, adding that a zero-tolerance policy is being strictly enforced against illegal constructions across the province. From January 2025 to November 5, 2025, the SBCA carried out a total of 1,622 operations against dangerous and unauthorized buildings across all districts of Karachi and other regions. During this period, 153 actions were taken in January, 110 in February, 146 in March, 179 in April, 135 in May, 121 in June, 240 in July, 171 in August, 159 in September, 185 in October, and 23 actions were conducted in the first five days of November. He reaffirmed the SBCA’s unwavering commitment to maintaining strict building safety standards across Karachi and other regions of Sindh. The Authority is fully dedicated to eliminating unsafe, unauthorized, and structurally weak constructions that endanger human lives. He emphasized that public safety remains the foremost mission of SBCA, and the ongoing demolition campaign reflects the government’s resolve to enforce building laws without any discrimination or compromise. “Our teams are working day and night to identify, seal and demolish hazardous structures. Every unsafe or illegal building poses a potential threat to innocent citizens — and we cannot allow negligence or violations of law to continue,” he said. Director General also appealed to the public to actively cooperate with SBCA by reporting any illegal or unsafe constructions in their areas. He assured citizens that all complaints and reports would be handled promptly and transparently. “A safer, well-regulated, and planned Karachi is our shared responsibility. Together, we can prevent tragedies and ensure that future constructions strictly comply with legal and safety standards.” Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
