Veteran actor Satish Shah, celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and memorable roles in classics such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, passed away on Saturday at the age of 74. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news of his demise on Instagram, revealing that Shah died due to kidney failure. In his video message, Pandit said that the actor’s health had suddenly deteriorated at home and he was rushed to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, where he passed away. Calling it a huge loss to the film and television industry, Pandit said, “Sad and shocked to inform you that our dear friend and a great actor Satish Shah has expired few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja hospital where he breathed his last. A great loss to our industry. Om Shanti.” Condolences Pour In From the Film Fraternity Soon after the news broke, an outpouring of grief and tributes filled social media as actors and filmmakers remembered Shah’s warmth, humour, and immense contribution to Indian entertainment. Filmmaker Karan Johar joined the long list of celebrities mourning the death of veteran actor Satish Shah, whose passing has left the industry deeply saddened. Taking to Instagram Stories, Karan shared a photo of the late actor and simply wrote, “Om Shanti ??????,” a brief yet heartfelt tribute that reflected the collective grief of the film fraternity. Choreographer and filmmaker Farah Khan, who directed Shah in her 2004 hit Main Hoon Na, also expressed her sorrow, remembering him not just as a talented performer but as a kind, witty presence on and off the set. She wrote, “Rest in peace dearest Satish. You were a joy to know and work with. Will miss you sending me memes and jokes everyday.” Actor Shilpa Shirodkar too paid her respects, offering prayers for his family in this difficult time. In her message, she wrote, “May his family and friends find strength in this difficult time. His manager told the publication that the actor’s body remains at the hospital, and the funeral will take place on Sunday. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Satish Shah became one of the most cherished names in Indian entertainment. After graduating from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, he trained at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, before making his debut with Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan (1978). He went on to appear in over 250 films, earning acclaim for his comic brilliance and versatility. His portrayal of Municipal Commissioner D’Mello in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), directed by Kundan Shah, remains one of Indian cinema’s most iconic performances. His filmography includes beloved hits such as Shakti, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Main Hoon Na, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Fanaa, and Om Shanti Om. However, it was his role as Indravadan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai that immortalised him in Indian television history. His effortless humour and impeccable timing made him a household name, with fans still quoting his dialogues decades later. Satish Shah is survived by his wife, Madhu Shah.
