Sardar Patel passed his matriculation at the late age of 22 but went on to become one of the most successful lawyers in the country. 2. Sardar Patel was appointed India’s first Deputy Prime Minister after Independence. 3. It was a remarkable turnaround for Patel to emerge as an inspiring leader, as he wasn’t initially interested in politics. He joined the freedom movement after meeting Mahatma Gandhi in 1917. 4. Patel joined Congress and became the secretary of its Gujarat Sabha. After Independence, he held portfolios of Home Affairs, States and Information and Broadcasting. 5. At the age of 36, Patel underwent a three-year law course at the Inns of Court Middle Temple in London. 6. The Iron Man of India completed his law course within 30 months instead of the usual 36-month duration to qualify as a barrister. 7. A staunch supporter of Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement, Patel travelled extensively to western India and mobilised 3 lakh members for the same.
