KUCHING, Sept 24: Sarawak is planning to send its civil service officers to undergo executive training programmes at Henley Business School, the University of Reading, and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), in a move to strengthen leadership and management capabilities in line with global standards.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the initiative during his working visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as a vital step to provide middle-level officers with international exposure and future-ready leadership skills.

“We would like to recommend collaboration between the two institutions and the Sarawak government to conduct executive programmes that provide training and exposure to our civil service officers, especially middle-level officers.

“This is so that they can adapt to changes in management and the way of working according to current needs that have greatly changed,” he said in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report following a visit to Henley Business School in London on Tuesday (Sept 23).

Henley Business School, where Abang Johari himself studied more than four decades ago, offers the Leadership 5.0 programme which emphasises future leadership strategies and the integration of emerging technologies, an approach he said was highly relevant to Sarawak’s aspirations.

To begin with, at least three officers will be sent each year, either through international open programmes or specially tailored courses for Sarawak’s needs.

“Maybe we will send three people this year, and another three next year, so that there is a more structured collaboration with Henley Business School,” he said, adding that the Sarawak Secretary would determine the final numbers.

The Premier’s visit also carried a sense of nostalgia as he returned to his alma mater after over 40 years. He recalled his student days in the UK, including his frequent train journeys from Reading Station to Paddington Station in London.

He was accompanied on the visit by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Attorney General Dato Sri Saferi Ali, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, and Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman. — DayakDaily
