Kaieteur Sports – The race for positions in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League continued on Wednesday evening, with Santos FC and defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) adding three valuable points to their tally in a rare midweek fixture at the Federation’s National Training Centre in Providence.

It was a night full of goals and commanding performances. The GDF, with their eyes still set on finishing as high up the table as possible, produced a demolition job on Ann’s Grove, running out emphatic 8–1 winners.

Santos, meanwhile, were just as ruthless, brushing aside Den Amstel with a convincing 4–0 scoreline to keep themselves in the top-half of the standings.

For the army side, it was a performance that showed both attacking flair and clinical finishing. Chris Macey was the man of the moment, scoring a sensational hat-trick with goals in the 68th, 77th and 90th minutes.

Jeffrey Pereira also had his say, netting twice in the 73rd and 80th minutes to cap off a strong showing.

The foundation of the victory, however, was laid early on, as Stephen McDonald (7’), Malcolm Miggings (25’) and Quancey Fraser (70’) all got their names on the scoresheet, ensuring GDF fans had little to worry about by the time the second half rolled around.

With the three points in hand, GDF remain in fourth place with 28 points from 13 games, but the battle for second is heating up.

They face a crucial clash with the Guyana Police Force on Saturday, a match that could go a long way in deciding who finishes runners-up to runaway leaders Slingerz FC.

Santos, on the other hand, continued their steady rise with a comfortable win over Den Amstel. They were gifted an early lead through an own goal by Rondel Hutson in the 14th minute, and from there, they never looked back.

Tywell Henry doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute, while Sigmund Cobena added a third just three minutes later.

The victory was sealed when Andrew Simmons struck in the 76th minute, putting the result beyond any doubt.

It was Santos’ sixth win of the season, moving them into fifth place, leapfrogging Monedderlust but still trailing GDF.

Monedderlust, however, have the chance to respond tonight when they take on Mainstay Gold Star in another double-header at Providence. With Gold Star struggling to find form, Monedderlust will be eager to capitalise and reclaim fifth spot.

There’s little suspense, as Slingerz FC remain in full control of the league. Sitting on 40 points from 14 games and unbeaten, the Vergenoegen-based giants need just two more wins from their final four fixtures to officially seal the title.

Slingerz FC’s next test comes on Saturday evening when they lock horns with Fruta Conquerors at 6:30 pm.

The statistics behind Slingerz’s dominance are staggering. They have scored a jaw-dropping 81 goals while conceding just three, boasting a +78 goal difference that reflects their superiority. With such numbers, it is no surprise that the title is already within touching distance.

The race for second and third promises drama, but when it comes to the top spot, the writing is already on the wall and the crown is Slingerz FC’s to lose.
