President Luis Abinader was in northeastern San Francisco de Macoris on Sunday, 2 November 2025 for the inauguration of the Dr. Ángel María Gatón Regional University Hospital, described as the state-of-the-art medical complex that is now the most complete and advanced regional hospital in the country. The construction of the hospital generated approximately 5,900 direct jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy in Duarte province. The new center, boasting 329 beds (294 for hospitalization and 35 for intensive care) is expected to significantly bolster healthcare services across the entire Northeast region. The facility replaces the San Vicente de Paúl Public Hospital. The Presidency says the hospital was built to the highest international quality and structural safety standards, featuring seismic damping systems and cutting-edge insulation. The complex, spanning over 48,000 square meters, includes: 32 consultation rooms Six operating rooms Blood bank, pharmacy, and morgue Clinical laboratories Specialized units including hemodialysis, HIV treatment, diabetic foot care, and comprehensive services for gynecology, dentistry, and adolescents. Critical Care: Neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, maternity and delivery rooms, and adult and pediatric emergency services. President Abinader framed the hospital’s delivery as integral to his administration’s comprehensive plan to strengthen public medical services and create a “virtuous circle of development” through coordinated investments in health, education, and infrastructure. This inauguration marks the 24th health infrastructure project delivered by the Abinader administration nationally, totaling 13 hospitals and 11 diagnostic and primary care centers, and adding over 1,300 hospital beds across the nation. One area will become part of the UASD School of Medicine in San Francisco, equipped with modern laboratories for training new professionals. Another section will house the Comprehensive Care Center for Disability (CAID) for the Northeast, along with new Territorial Therapeutic Intervention Units (UITT). Furthermore, President Abinader announced a second phase for the new hospital, which will incorporate a mental health area and a specialized trauma unit, aligning with the national plan to strengthen the trauma care network. Mario Lama, Director of the National Health Service (SNS), confirmed the hospital will be operational in stages: December 15: Consultations, laboratories, and imaging services begin. February 2: Pediatric and adult emergencies, operating rooms, and intensive care units commence operation. March 2: Full operation of emergencies, operating rooms, and inpatient services.
