San Diego Weekend Guide: Oct. 3-5 – Hans Zimmer & Hoops

Spooky season gets a lot of love this time of year, and rightfully so, but let’s shine a light on some other incredible happenings throughout San Diego County this weekend. From live music and cultural celebrations to sports, history and art, the lineup spans the breadth of the community.

Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town has come alive to honor the dead, transforming into a Día de los Muertos wonderland every day through Nov. 2 from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Now in its fourth year, this free celebration honors San Diego’s rich Hispanic heritage with more than 60 unique Day of the Dead displays, thousands of marigolds filling the courtyard, life-sized Catrina skeleton dolls in fancy dress, live entertainment and traditional altars throughout the plaza. Casa de Reyes and Barra Barra Saloon will also be serving up themed menu items all month long.

Whether you vibe with film scores or B.o.B., this weekend’s music menu has some range:

The second annual San Diego Tijuana International Jazz Festival runs through Sunday, celebrating over a century of binational jazz history that connects our region across the border. The festival kicked off Thursday in San Diego’s East Village, moves to North County Saturday and wraps Sunday in Tijuana – three venues, one celebration of the deep cultural ties and jazz legacies that unite our communities. Check out our story previewing the tribute to legendary saxophonist James Moody Saturday at the California Center for the Arts from 3-9:30 p.m. in Escondido. Tickets start at $35.

The World of Hans Zimmer: A New Dimension comes to Midway District’s Pechanga Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m. This isn’t just a concert – it’s a full sensory experience featuring Zimmer’s legendary scores from films such as Dune, Gladiator, Inception, The Dark Knight, Top Gun: Maverick and Dunkirk performed live by a full orchestra and virtuoso soloists.
