San Diego Wave’s season ends with 2-1 loss to Kansas City Current

The Kansas City Current closed out a record-breaking regular season with a 2-1 win over the San Diego Wave at CPKC Stadium on Sunday, the NWSL‘s Decision Day when all 14 teams were in action and results set the seeding for the eight-team playoffs. San Diego started strong, opening the scoring in the eighth minute through forward Dudinha, who netted her fifth goal in as many games against the 2025 NWSL Shield winners. The play began with Dudinha cutting through the defense and laying the ball off to Perle Morroni, who slipped a pass back into her path. The Brazilian took a first-time shot that slipped through the legs of Kansas City goalkeeper Lorena to give the Wave the early 1-0 lead. The Wave held onto the advantage until the 54th minute when the Current earned a free kick at the edge of the box. Kansas City’s Debinha stepped up and delivered a curling strike into the back of the net to level the match. The victory gave the Current a final regular-season record of 21-3-2 and the team set single-season records for total points (65), wins (21), goals conceded (13), and shutouts (16). The top-seeded Current will host eighth-seed Gotham FC in the quarterfinals next weekend. The Wave (10-8-7) will travel to face the Portland Thorns on Nov. 9 at Providence Park in the quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for noon Pacific time, with the match broadcast nationally on ABC. The Associated Press contributed to this article.
