Heads up, beachgoers, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality has issued a General Rain Advisory for all coastal beaches and bays on Thursday, Sept. 18, due to recent rainfall.
Officials warn that rain brings urban runoff, which can significantly raise bacteria levels in the ocean and bay waters, particularly near storm drains, creeks, rivers, and lagoon outlets. Water contact activities such as swimming, surfing, and diving should be avoided during rainfall and for 72 hours afterward, as exposure may cause illness.
Several beach management actions remain in effect across the county. Advisories are still posted for La Jolla Children’s Pool, Imperial Beach Shoreline, Lawrence Street, North Cove Vacation Isle, Fanuel Park, and Crown Point, where bacteria levels have exceeded state health standards.
A closure also remains in place for Tijuana Slough. The shoreline from the international border to three-quarters of a mile north of the Tijuana River outlet is closed until testing shows the water is safe. Officials say the area is impacted by sewage and other pollutants, posing health risks for beachgoers.
