San Diego Airports to Receive $4 Million in Federal Grants for Infrastructure Upgrades

San Diego’s transportation infrastructure is set to significantly boost as the city announces nearly $4 million in federal grants earmarked for airport improvements. The funds will be dispersed among the city’s two airports, Montgomery-Gibbs Executive and Brown Field, aiming to enhance the safety and efficiency of air travel in the region.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has stepped in with three grants, comprising $2.8 million for design costs related to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport’s secondary runway and terminal apron, while the remaining, just over $1 million, is allocated for the design phase for taxiway rehabilitation at Brown Field Airport. However, the execution of these upgrades proves that the bones of our city’s aerial gateways are more than just landing strips but rather essential threads in the fabric of our economic and logistical tapestry.

According to a report by the City of San Diego, Economic Development Deputy Director and Chief of Airports Jorge Rubio said, “This federal funding is critical to addressing immediate infrastructure needs at both of the City’s airports, helping to prevent delays in project design and construction while ensuring our facilities remain in top condition.” The grants will cover 95% of the design costs, with the remaining funds coming from the airports’ generated revenue and other funding sources. No contributions from the city’s General Fund are required for these developments.

A key facet of these grants is infrastructure and their ripple effect: bolstering the local economy. The Brown Field redevelopment project is an ambitious 20-year plan, with expectations to inject $1.5 billion into the region’s economy and support around 2,500 jobs. Walt Bishop, Mayor Todd Gloria’s Director of Government Affairs, acknowledged in a statement, as per the City of San Diego, “A project like this would not be possible without the advocacy of San Diego’s congressional delegation.” He also noted their role in driving opportunities for business, jobs, and community growth locally.
