Sampa, the capital of the Jaman North District in the Bono Region, was thrown into chaos on Wednesday afternoon, 10 September, after fresh violence erupted over a long-running chieftaincy dispute.
At least one person, believed to be a woman, was reportedly shot dead in the clashes. Her identity is yet to be officially confirmed.
Sources told Asaase News that three police officers sustained injuries while attempting to restore calm. They are currently receiving treatment at various health facilities in the district.
The disturbances also left widespread destruction in their wake. Several houses, about 10 shops, and parts of the town’s market were set ablaze, sending plumes of smoke across the community and forcing terrified residents to flee for safety.
The immediate cause of the renewed clashes remains unclear. However, tensions over the Sampa chieftaincy dispute have flared repeatedly in recent years, often plunging the border town into violence and instability.
Efforts by Asaase News to reach the Jaman North District Chief Executive, George Adane, for comments proved unsuccessful.
The Bono Regional Police Command has since deployed additional security personnel to the area in a bid to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
