New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Thursday arrested former Godfrey Phillips director Samir Modi on a complaint of rape made by an ex-employee of the company, people in the know said.A law firm representing Samir Modi called the allegations “false” and said the complainant was trying to extort money from the businessman.According to a first information report registered with a police station in South Delhi on September 10, Samir Modi is accused of indulging in physical exploitation and rape of the complainant since December 2019.It claims he had promised her the job of executive assistant to the chief executive of Godfrey Phillips India, and that she was forced to take it up due to lack of employment opportunities during Covid.She alleged she was physically assaulted, including at his residence, more than once.Live EventsThe charges come amid a bitter family feud for control of tobacco major Godfrey Phillips.Samir Modi was removed from the board of the company last year after he filed cases stating his mother Bina Modi was not making distributions of the family wealth as dictated in a trust deed. Bina Modi is the chairperson of Godfrey Phillips India.The complainant in the FIR accused Samir Modi of intimidation and claimed that she was under pressure not to report the matter to the police.The complainant could not be reached for comment.”Today, Samir Modi was detained at the airport pursuant to a lookout circular request made by police station New Friends Colony (Delhi). Later he was arrested on false charges of rape,” law firm Sakura Advisory said in a statement on behalf of Samir Modi.”The complaint is based on false and concocted facts and the allegations have been made with the ulterior motive of extracting money from Samir Modi,” it claimed. “On August 8 and 13, 2025, Samir Modi filed complaints before various police officers for extortion and blackmail by the lady.
