The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has made a U-turn on his earlier call for a reduction in DStv package prices for Ghanaians.

He stressed that economic stability goes beyond pricing. After initially advocating for lower subscription fees to ease the burden on consumers, the minister now emphasises that a stable economy and a strong currency are the real solutions.

He explained that when the economy is stable, multinational companies like MultiChoice can better forecast, plan, and invest in Ghana, ultimately benefiting consumers.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 29, 2025, Sam George praised the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, for his efforts to stabilise the cedi and the local economy.

“But trust me, Ato is forcing. Our finance minister is on his bit. He knows his job and he will deliver a stable currency and a stable economy. Because you see, what a stable currency does is not to make Sam George go and ask for reductions. It allows companies like MultiChoice to forecast and plan in bringing more investment into your country,” the communication minister said.

He added, “The need for economic stability goes beyond pricing. It extends even to the expansion of operations in-country because companies know they have a stable economy. They can forecast what investment can come in, and they are sure they will get returns on it. So the president’s vision for a stable economy, trust me, will remain the same.”

Just weeks earlier, in August 2025, Sam George had criticised the pricing disparity of DStv packages across African countries. He argued that Ghanaians were paying nearly 30% more than their neighbors, calling for fairer treatment.

He noted that the same premium bouquet package offered to Ghanaians at the equivalent of $83 was available to Nigerians for just $29.

He also revealed that in June 2024, MultiChoice had reduced premium package prices in Liberia by $30, despite similar market conditions to Ghana. Lower-tier bundles were also reduced by $17.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on August 1, 2025, Sam George warned that if MultiChoice failed to reduce its prices in Ghana, the company’s broadcasting license would be suspended effective August 7, 2025.

Meanwhile, effective October 1, 2025, DStv subscribers in Ghana will benefit from value adjustments to subscription packages, depending on their bouquet.

This development follows a series of meetings between the Government of Ghana and the MultiChoice Group.

According to Sam George, Ghanaian subscribers can expect value increases of between 33% and 50% across DStv packages.

Speaking at the press conference on September 29, 2025, he also announced that MultiChoice has agreed to provide up to 50% more content at no additional cost, depending on a subscriber’s current bouquet.

He explained that these changes are designed to deliver greater value and enhanced viewing experiences across all DStv subscription packages.

Here’s what subscribers will pay for their DStv packages:

* Padi Bouquet (GH¢59)
Subscribers will be automatically upgraded to the Access bouquet, valued at GH¢99, gaining 35 additional channels. This represents 40% savings.

* Access Bouquet (GH¢99)
Customers will be upgraded to the Family bouquet, currently priced at GH¢190, with 19 extra channels. This delivers 48% savings.

* Family Bouquet (GH¢190)
Subscribers will be upgraded to the Compact bouquet, priced at GH¢380, with 22 more channels and access to live football matches. This offers 50% savings and introduces premium sports content to Family bouquet users for the first time.

* Compact Bouquet (GH¢380)
Users will be upgraded to Compact Plus, valued at GH¢570, gaining 12 additional channels. This equates to 33% savings.

* Compact Plus (GH¢570)
Subscribers will move up to the Premium bouquet, priced at GH¢865, receiving 18 additional channels and a 34% value gain.

* Premium Bouquet (GH¢865)
While there is no higher tier to upgrade to, Premium subscribers will continue to enjoy the full range of DStv content, along with all enhancements introduced across the lower tiers.

This new offer will run for an initial period of three months and is subject to renewal, pending a new agreement between the Government of Ghana and the MultiChoice Group.
