Salt Point State Park Plans Controlled Burn for Ecological Health, Public Advised of Minor Disruptions

Fire, while often a topic of much consternation among California residents, is playing a helpful role at Salt Point State Park. California State Parks has announced plans for a controlled burn of up to 47 acres starting as early as this Friday, Oct. 31, or whenever Mother Nature gives the green light. The prescribed burn is designed to support various long-term stewardship efforts, including vegetation management and wildlife habitat improvement, among others. Gerstle Cove will be the center of these operations, but the park will maintain an open status for the adventurous souls seeking their regular communion with nature. Specific areas around the Southern Terminus of the Salt Point Trail Parking Lot and Overflow Parking/Camping are facing temporary closure, a small price to pay for the safety and efficacy of the operations. Those eager to hike or camp should plan accordingly and heed any signage or directions provided by park staff or fire personnel. The burn, according to the California State Parks release, is a part of the State Parks’ Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) program. It's not just about the flames; it's about training fire practitioners and fostering vital info-sharing networks in the fire management field.
