Sainsbury's recalls home product as it may be 'toxic' to humans and animals

Sainsbury's has issued an urgent recall for a product that could prove "toxic" to both humans and animals if consumed. Retailers and the Food Standards Agency routinely pull products from shelves for various safety concerns. Items can be withdrawn due to contamination with dangerous pathogens such as listeria or salmonella . These pathogens may cause food poisoning, manufacturing defects like plastic or metal fragments, or missing allergen warnings. Food companies bear responsibility for removing unsafe products from sale. The Food Standards Agency collaborates with local councils and the food sector to alert shoppers when items are recalled. The item being withdrawn by Sainsbury's originates from its Habitat homeware section, reports the Liverpool Echo . The supermarket chain has removed Habitat Seed Pod Bowl Filler from its stores. The details are as follows: Habitat Seed Pod Bowl Filler. Product name: Habitat Seed Pod Bowl Filler. Product code: 146383921. Product description: Ornamental seed pods. The retailer advises on its website: "If you have purchased, please bag and return to store for a full refund. "Please do not dispose of in compost heaps, food or garden waste bins. "We take the quality and safety of our products extremely seriously and would like to apologise to customers affected for any inconvenience this may cause. No other Habitat home products are affected by this recall." Sainsbury's has issued a product recall due to the seeds within the pods being harmful to both humans and animals if consumed, although the outer shell is safe to touch. The product fails to comply with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. It comes just days after chocolate biscuits sold at TK Maxx and Homesense were found to be not suitable for all consumers. As a result, a major recall has been announced. TJX Europe, the owner of the two popular retailers , has issued a recall notice for multiple packs of the Les Florentins Chocolat Biscuits as they contain gluten, an ingredient not declared on the packaging. This means that the biscuits are not suitable for anyone with either a coeliac disease or an allergy to gluten , with the firm advising these customers "do not eat them." Elsewhere, an urgent product recall has been given to supermarkets across the UK over fears that a certain brand of sausages could lead to major health risks if consumed. As a result, the stock is being removed from shelves and customers are being asked to return the product to their local store. The product recall was announced by the Foods Standards Agency (FSA), which found that the Leek Porkers sausages from Jolly Hog could trigger severe allergic reactions as an important ingredient was missing from the label. The Leek Porkers sausages contain milk . However this vital information was missing from the label. According to the FSA, this labelling mix up means that the product is a "possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents."
