Team Europe came out swinging in the opening session of the 2025 Ryder Cup, delivering a commanding performance in Friday morning’s foursomes that left the American side reeling and the New York crowd stunned. Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm set the tone early, dispatching Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau with a clinical 4 & 3 victory. Rahm’s iron play was razor-sharp, and Hatton’s putting proved lethal on Bethpage’s notoriously tricky greens. The Americans fired up the crowd early by winning the first hole, but that was the extent of their impact on the match. Rahm and Hatton tied on the 7th and took the lead on the 8th, sealing the match by also winning the 12th, 13th and 15th holes. That was the end of it, with the Europeans taking the point with a score of 4&3. If Rahm and Hatton were surgical, Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg were merciless in facing none other than World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and World No. 3 Russell Henley. The Europeans took the lead on the first hole, and from there on, everything went smoothly for them, adding another six holes. The Americans could only respond with victories on the 2nd and 13th, so Aberg and Hatton won the match 5&3 in just 15 holes. Aberg now has a record of two wins in as many Ryder Cup matches against Scheffler. Not a small feat to brag about. McIlroy and Fleetwood won five of the first eight holes and added another on the 12th, while Morikawa and English were only able to save face by winning the 9th. The only flicker of American resistance came from Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who edged out Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland 1 Up in a tense battle that went the distance. It was a much-needed point for Team USA, which now trails 3-1.
