Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman set for Wrexham showdown as rivalry takes new twist

The rivalry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is about to reach new levels as Wrexham prepare to take on Norwich City . The Deadpool and Wolverine co-stars have been engaged in an entertaining “feud” for many years, often making fun of each other on social media. While the two actors are good friends in reality, their relationship will be put to the test on Saturday as Wrexham travel to face Norwich at Carrow Road in the Championship on Saturday. Reynolds bought the Red Dragons with fellow Hollywood star Rob Mac in February 2021, with the club since rising from the National League to the second tier via three consecutive promotions under their stewardship. Meanwhile, Jackman is a longstanding Norwich fan, which could lead to some awkwardness between the pair. The Australian, who is best known for playing the Marvel character Wolverine, explained how he came to support the Canaries during an appearance with Reynolds on The One Show last year. “My mum was born and bred and lives in Norwich,” the 56-year-old told the BBC . “I remember being about seven and saying to my parents, ‘I want to find a team.’ “‘Dad, where are you from?’ He goes ‘I’m from London’. I said, ‘well what’s the team?’ He was like ‘there are five teams’. I said ‘mum where are you from?’ She goes ‘Norwich’.” Jackman said his allegiance to Norwich started on that day and has continued ever since. He previously revealed in 2011 how he once had the opportunity to invest in the Canaries, but unlike his friend Reynolds, chose not to enter the world of football ownership. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live , Jackman said: “Sometimes I make big mistakes. I got a letter about a year ago saying, ‘Being such a huge Norwich City fan would I like to be a celebrity investor?’, like a small part-owner. I decided not to invest and since then they’re on a run, so what do I know?” Wrexham have had a difficult start this season after picking up just four points from their five opening matches, and currently sit 21st in the Championship table. Norwich are 10th after registering three points more than Phil Parkinson’s side. The Red Dragons manager has already come under pressure after a poor set of results following reports that the club’s owners have already held discussions over his future. Reynolds was in attendance at the Racecourse Ground to witness their 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Queens Park Rangers last weekend. Jackman has regularly commented on Reynolds’ ownership of Wrexham. Around the time of the takeover in 2021, he joked that he felt sorry for the people of Wrexham, claiming they would be experiencing a “nightmare”. The club hit back after sharing a clip of his comments on social media, saying “Wolverine’s overrated anyway”. Jackman then disclosed in February 2023 how some of Wrexham’s rivals had offered him co-ownership and that “to stick it to Ryan Reynolds” he wanted to score a winning goal against the North Wales outfit. Despite the jibes, Jackman is among the many famous faces to have joined the Canadian to watch Wrexham from the owners’ box. In August 2023, he attended the club’s first game back in the Football League against MK Dons. While his allegiances will be elsewhere this weekend, Jackman has spoken positively of his visit to the Racecourse. Speaking on the FIVE podcast with Rio Ferdinand, he said: “Going to a Wrexham game was one of the great highlights for me. We were walking around and it really mirrored my relationship with Ryan. Because I could see it in the eyes of people going, ‘I really thought you were a ****, but you are actually a good guy and on a massive level.'”
