Fortunately, Bodhi came over the radio at a time where there was a break in the action. Blaney chuckled on the radio before making a request.
“Mom, get Bodhi off the scanner.”
Ryan Blaney opens up about radio ‘hijacking’ at Bristol
Blaney spoke to the media Tuesday and revealed that his two nephews, 6-year-old Louie and Bodhi were at the Round of 16 finale at Bristol. He visited them in his motorhome before the race, and young Bodhi took an interest in the radio which had Blaney’s wife, Gianna, name on it. Blaney and Gianna thought the button to talk on the radio was disabled; they were wrong.
“He’s like ‘Oh, like a walkie-talkie,’” Blaney said, via Dustin Long of NBC Sports. “I was like, ‘Yeah, kind of like a walkie-talkie.’ I guess he took that and remembered that. Smart kid, man, figured it out, turned it on, pushed the button and gave me a little bit of motivation.”
Bodhi did his best to will Blaney to victory, but he came up just short at Bristol. Blaney finished fourth for the second consecutive week, advancing to the Round of 12 of the postseason with no issue. No, he didn’t win at Bristol. But after that interaction with Bodhi on the radio, he’ll never forget this one.
“It might be the first time that I’ve been genuinely very shocked of who’s gotten on the radio and has talked,” Blaney said. “It was a funny moment, for sure. I got a great laugh out of it. My mother was mortified. She turned around to microwave something for seconds and they somehow got the radio.”
