Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) has reported the discovery of 68 new foreign-made components in Russian missiles and drones used in attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities. According to the report, the updated HUR list includes components found in the 9M727 Iskander-K cruise missile, the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistics missile, the North Korean KN-23/KN-24 ballistic missile, and the Geran-2 (Shahed-136) strike unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). These weapons were used by Russia during the massive combined air attack on Ukraine’s energy and civilian infrastructure in the early hours of Oct. 22. “Despite reports of ‘localization successes,’ Russian missiles and drones continue to rely on chips made by American, Chinese, Swiss, Japanese, Taiwanese, and other foreign manufacturers,” the report reads. At the same time, two of the six types of weapons used in the attack reached Russia thanks to support from its strategic partners – Iran and North Korea. “This highlights the risks for regions far beyond Europe, in particular for the Indo-Pacific region and the Middle East,” the intelligence agency stated. According to HUR, the following foreign companies’ components are in Russian missiles and drones: United States: MACOM Technology Solutions Linear Technology Corporation (Analog Devices) Texas Instruments Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. Burr-Brown Corporation (Texas Instruments) Fairchild Semiconductor (ON Semiconductor) TriQuint Semiconductor (Qorvo) Analog Devices Maxim Integrated Products (Analog Devices) Integrated Device Technology (Renesas) Micrel Inc. (Microchip Technology Inc.) Mini-Circuits Altera Corporation (Intel) International Rectifier (Infineon Technologies) Cypress Semiconductor Corporation Switzerland: STMicroelectronics Traco Power Netherlands: NXP Semiconductors Zhejiang Deli Connectors Co., Ltd. Xuyi OuGe Electronics Co., Ltd. Binhai Zhirun Electronics Co., Ltd. Nanjing Qinheng Microelectronics Co., Ltd. (WinChipHead, WCH) Zbit Semi Changzhou AMASS Electronics Co., Ltd. SONiX Technology VBsemi Electronics Co., Ltd. GigaDevice Republic of Korea - Ricci Microwave United Kingdom - Golledge Electronics Ltd. “The latest update confirms that current global export control practices and international cooperation mechanisms must be reviewed and strengthened to meet the challenges of wartime,” HUR said. Ukraine has discovered tens of thousands of foreign-made components, including Western parts, in the drones and missiles Russia used during a massive weekend air attack, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Oct. 6. Zelensky reported that during the combined strike on the night of Oct. 5, Russia used 549 weapon systems containing more than 102,000 foreign-made components. According to the president, the parts found in the downed drones and missiles originated “from companies in the United States, China and Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the Netherlands.” Converters, sensors, and microcomputers were among the foreign components identified. “Microcontrollers for UAVs are made in Switzerland, while microcomputers for drone flight control are produced in the United Kingdom,” Zelensky said. He added that Ukraine was preparing new sanctions against the manufacturers involved. Zelensky said that Kyiv’s partners had detailed data on each company and product, and therefore understood what targets to address and how to respond.
