Russell Martin confirms post-Genk meeting with Rangers chief Andrew Cavenagh during abrupt spiky live TV interview

RUSSELL MARTIN confirmed he had a scheduled meeting with Rangers owner Andrew Cavenagh after tonight’s match against and was “looking forward to it” – despite his team losing once again.

The Ibrox side were beaten 1-0 by Genk in their Europa League opener, meaning that Martin has now won only four of his 14 games in charge.

Cavenagh, who led on the takeover of the Glasgow club in the summer, was in the stands to watch the game.

In an interview with TNT Sports, Martin said he was due to meet with the Gers chief after the full-time whistle.

And the Rangers boss was on the defensive more than once during the chat.

The spiky interview saw Martin respond to one question before the reporter was finished, before he later revealed the only thing he can do to win supporters over.

Asked for his immediate assessment of the performance, Martin said: “I think it is difficult because we were down to ten men for so long.

“We had good control and then a tough spell when we had to defend a little bit because we weren’t good enough or clean enough with the ball.

“I thought we rode that out, and then Dio gets sent off and it changes the game.

“The lads I thought were good second half, we looked a threat on the break.

“They scored a goal we shouldn’t concede.”

The reporter’s next question then began asking Martin if he could be proud of the result on the night.

And the Gers said midway through the question: “I’m not proud of the result. We’re not talking about the result, you asked about the performance.”

Once the reporter finished his question, which centred on the chances Genk created, Martin said: “Yeah, I just said to you we had good control for 25, 30 minutes and then we had a wobbly spell for five or ten minutes when we weren’t clean enough with the ball and had to defend a bit more.

“We had moments as well, we were in their box a lot.

Martin was then asked why his team lost control of the game after that 30-minute spell he referred to, to which he responded: “I just said we weren’t clean enough with the ball.”

Pressed for why that was the case, Martin said: “I think we trap ourselves, we don’t show enough intensity to receive the ball and find the other side of the pitch. It hurt us a bit.”

Majority shareholder Cavenagh was in attendance again tonight after taking in Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup quarter-final win against Hibs amid fan protests at the new manager.

Martin was asked what he felt Cavenagh would think of yet more unrest and chants of “Martin, get to f***”, the Gers boss revealed he would soon be on his way to a meeting with him anyway.

He said: “I will find out in about 15 minutes.

“I look forward to seeing him and chatting to him.

Martin continued: “I’ve said so many times before, the only thing that will impact that is winning football matches.

“I think inside the building, they have been amazing, the players, the staff, so we have to keep focusing on that and the outcome will end up being positive.

“Hopefully, that will end up turning the supporters.”
