RuPaul labelled ‘dystopian’ for using images of fracking as DJ set background

RuPaul has been embroiled in the controversy surrounding fracking for some time now, and re-ignited the row at the weekend by using images of the oil extraction practice as the background for his DJ set.

The Drag Race host was on the decks at Parc Jean-Drapeau, in Montreal, Canada, on Saturday (13 September) and a video uploaded to TikTok the following day showed the set’s background, which resembled an oil-exploration site.

The video’s text read: “RuPaul minutes later after putting fracking videos as his background scenes of him DJ’ing,” while another caption read: “So dystopian, but also that’s the funniest thing hes ever done.”

The TikTok started with RuPaul dancing. Then there was a clip of the DJ decks with his face projected on to a huge screen. The backdrop appeared to be that of a luminescent fracking site.

Someone posted on X/Twitter: “RuPaul playing videos of fracking… with the words during her DJ set!”

On Reddit, another video seemed to show land explosions in the background visuals as RuPaul worked the decks in front of the screen. “I’m at the point where I have to laugh at the audacity,” one person wrote.

However, others were quick to defend the drag superstar, saying: “What audacity? She’s making fun of the fact that y’all think she is the fracker when it’s her husband’s generational family business.”

How is RuPaul associated with fracking?

RuPaul was first mentioned alongside fracking, a well stimulation technique used to create pathways for oil, gas or water, in 2020.

At the time, environmentalists criticised the drag queen for leasing mineral rights and selling water to oil companies on his ranch in Wyoming ranch, where, it was claimed, there were at least 35 active wells.

Many people were frustrated by his alleged involvement with the environmental impacts of fracking, which include water pollution and methane release.

While live together on social media five years ago, Drag Race favourites Bob the Drag Queen and Peppermint were in hysterics after the former brought up fracking, with both holding up crosses to the camera.
