Ruben Amorim explains Jack Fletcher selection as Man Utd save 88-year historic record

Ruben Amorim has reiterated that Manchester United will not break the 88-year record of always having a homegrown player involved every matchday squad . Teenage midfielder Jack Fletcher has come in for their match against Tottenham Hotspur to keep the streak going in the absence of Kobbie Mainoo through a minor injury. The sequence dates back to 1937 and stretches over 4,000 consecutive matches. Players satisfy the club's requirements so long as they did not play for anyone else's first-team before joining the club aged 20 or younger, and going on to play for one of their academy sides. Fletcher joined United two years ago from Manchester City alongside his twin brother Jack. Both players are the sons of Darren Fletcher , who currently serves as the lead coach of the club's under-18s after previously working with the first team and holding the position of technical director. On maintaining that "really important" record, Amorim told TNT Sports: "We are in the moment where, if we are going to cut some corners to succeed right away, that's the wrong thing. There is something special in our club where we need to be bulletproof, with the way we behave and the way we operate the club. "We are not going to stop with this and these academy players. It doesn't matter the result; it doesn't matter anything else. "We need to continue with these small details that are the foundation of our club. We have that record; we are not going to break that record, and Jack is ready to help us. "We do two things together - to show people that our academy is also our future and to also show that the players need to be ready, because we are going to need them at some point." Jack Fletcher has previously featured in the United matchday squad on six occasions, but the last of those was in March. The midfielder also made two substitute appearances during pre-season, first against Leeds United and then again versus West Ham United in the Premier League Summer Series. Since then, Fletcher has been playing for the under-21s and has scored three goals this season, including one against Barnsley in the EFL Trophy last month. He also played against Tottenham's under-21s a fortnight ago, assisting Gabriele Biancheri for his hat-trick goal in a 4-1 win. Next week will also see Fletcher once again join up with the England under-19s for their European Championship qualifiers against Latvia, Lithuania and Scotland . His twin brother, Tyler, is in the latter's squad, as is fellow United teammate Daniel Armer. Harry Amass joins Jack in receiving another England call-up as the teenager continues to play regularly for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship. Both players made their debuts for the under-19s against Belgium in October and also won their second caps four days later in a 7-0 win over Wales.
