Liverpool find themselves in pole position to sign Marc Guehi in the summer and should that deal be completed, Manchester United will be looking on enviously. Crystal Palace's centre-back has shone in recent seasons and perhaps took everyone by surprise in 2024 when he played so well at the European Championship with England. After that it seemed like only a matter of time before he would leave Selhurst Park. Guehi nearly joined Liverpool on deadline day but the deal fell through after an agreement for his replacement was not reached. It was not long before Oliver Glasner confirmed the inevitable that Guehi would be leaving at the end of the season. Now, the likelihood of him moving anywhere other than Liverpool is slim. But United would be wrong not to try and hijack the move. Centre-back reinforcements are unlikely to be a priority in the summer. However, should Harry Maguire not stay, he will need to be replaced. Most United fans would be delighted to see the centre-back extend his contract but he will have to take a pay cut in order to do so. Maguire leaving on a free would mean United would need to sign a replacement, something they could do without given the money they will need to spend on their midfield. Guehi arriving on a free would sort that particular problem out. He is also a good fit for the system having played on the left side of a back three. Luke Shaw has excelled there of late but his injury record is awful, while fellow left-sided option Lisandro Martinez has also had injury troubles. Guehi has the character needed to succeed at Old Trafford and is Premier League proven, something Ruben Amorim was keen to focus on during the summer transfer window. Given the early success of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, you can imagine Amorim will be keen to do likewise next summer. If United can persuade Leny Yoro to reject Real Madrid then why can't they convince Guehi to reject Liverpool? --- Here at The Manchester Evening News, we are dedicated to bringing you the best Manchester United coverage and analysis.
