Royals squeak past Amazon Warriors by three runs

Defending champions the Barbados Royals maintained their perfect record in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League as they overcame the Guyana Amazon Warriors by three runs yesterday at the National Stadium in Providence.

The Amazon Warriors who were set a target of 133 after Barbados ended on 132/6, fell agonizingly short on 129/8. Amy Hunter recorded a game-high 63 runs, which contained nine boundaries. The other batswoman who recorded a double-figure score was Captain Shemaine Campbelle, whose 40 runs were highlighted by two boundaries and a maximum.

Chamari Athapaththu led the bowling effort for the visitors with 3-25, while Afy Fletcher recorded 2-28. Supporting with figures of 1-1 and 1-17 were Qiana Joseph and Aaliyah Alleyne.

Despite an initial setback following the dismissal of Realanna Grimmond, who was bowled for four runs by Athapaththu (16/1), Guyana seemed destined for victory as the pair of Campbelle and Hunter added 73 runs.
