New legislation in both houses of Congress should get motors running among those who get their kicks on Route 66 — which will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.
U.S. Rep Darin LaHood, R-Peoria, Illinois, leads the House effort, while U.S. Sens. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, and Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois, have joined U.S. Senate bill’s sponsor, Mark Kelly, D-Arizona.
The bill, officially dubbed the “Route 66 National Historic Trail Designation Act,” would provide federal protection for sites along the thoroughfare known as “The Mother Road.”
Schmitt called the road “a vital and historic highway that connects the heartland of America to the West, creating jobs and economic opportunities in communities across Missouri.”
Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926, and runs for about 2,400 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles. In Missouri, the now-decommissioned highway generally follows the path of Interstate 44.
In St. Louis, Route 66 wound its way through a number of alignments, including the Chain of Rocks and McKinley bridges, Chouteau Avenue, Tucker Boulevard, Gravois Avenue, Chippewa Street and Manchester Road. Heading west, it went through Wildwood, Eureka and Pacific.
During its heydey, the road was a key route for Americans migrating during the Great Depression and a popular vacation travel route after World War II.
