The Rotarians in Madurai city who embarked on a major initiative of providing infrastructural facilities to persons with autism and other intellectually challenged people have succeeded in a big way. By joining hands with philanthropists and corporate houses, which gifted funds through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) channel, the dream has become a reality. Rotarian T. Ravee, a former president of Rotary Club of Madurai West, said on Saturday that they received ₹50 lakh in two phases from the Paramount Textile Mills and among other corporate houses towards this project. To execute the initiative, Dheemahi - Madurai was formed in October 2019 with the objective of evolving appropriate measures for the benefit of autistic and other intellectually challenged individuals with particular focus on training them in a suitable vocation with a residential facility. He said that Dheemahi is a project of Saksham - Samdrushti Kshamata Vikas Evam Anusandhan Mandal, a registered charitable national organisation established in Nagpur in 2008, which caters to the intellectually challenged individuals. For this noble cause, Dheemahi Saksham had received a little over an acre of land near the AIIMS site, Thoppur, Madurai. With the funds received, the Rotarians built the infrastructural facilities, including compound wall, portico and paver blocks, which were almost nearing completion. In fact, the facility would soon have two lifts for easy movement of the occupants who can move around without difficulty in the multi-storey complex. The cheques received from Lakshmi Murugesan and Ram of Paramount Textile Mills were handed over to G. Ramakrishnan, advisor of Dheemahi Special School here on Friday, Mr. Ravee added.
