Rotary Consett has been formally recognised at this year’s Red Kite Awards, sponsored by MP Liz Twist, for its unwavering dedication to supporting the local community. Founded in 1942, Rotary Consett has been a fixture in the town for over 80 years. The club’s recent fundraising and outreach efforts are setting new standards for grassroots community involvement. £10,500 Raised Since July In just a few months, Rotary Consett has raised an impressive £10,500 through two successful golf days and a lively race night. Of this, £3,000 was donated directly to Willowburn Hospice, a vital service for the region. In addition, the club is breaking new ground by launching a Consett Prostate Cancer Support Group, due to begin in January 2026. It will be fully funded by Rotary Consett, and marks a significant step, as no such support currently exists in the area. Plans are already in motion to expand the initiative to Stanley the following year. World Polio Day and Local Partnerships To mark World Polio Day on 24th October, Rotary Consett has collaborated with eight local community groups and employers to promote awareness and celebrate Rotary International’s role in making the world 99.9% polio free. President Rob Grinter shared: “We do what we do because we are supportive of our community – but it is nice to be recognised.” Ongoing Local Support and Outreach Rotary Consett’s commitment extends year-round. In the past year, the club has made significant donations to: Macmillan Nurses The Women’s Cancer Detection Society Gateshead If U Care Share They also run a weekly dementia-friendly choir, which brings together more than 30 people and their carers for music, connection and support. Fastest Growing Rotary Club in the Region Since July, the club has welcomed 12 new members, bringing total membership to 37. This makes Rotary Consett the fastest growing Rotary club in the region. The club’s hands-on approach, deep community connections, and practical support for other groups continue to be the foundation of its success.
