Rocks defeat Tuskers as Eagles grit foils Rhinos

Tuskers – 242 and 167 all out in 68.2 overs (Ernest Masuku 45, Tanatswa Bechani 33, Ainsley Ndlovu 23; Roy Kaia 3/31, Owen Muzondo 2/9, Tafara Chingwara 2/28) Southern Rocks – 209 and 201-6 in 62.3 overs (Johnathan Campbell 41, Tafadzwa Tsiga 35*, Matthew Campbell 35; Ainsley Ndlovu 3/40, Mgcini Dube 2/23, Brian Chari 1/36) Southern Rocks won by four wickets Southern Rocks opened their 2025/26 Logan Cup campaign with a four-wicket victory over Tuskers at Queens Sports Club on Wednesday, thanks to a cool, unbeaten 35 from Tafadzwa Tsiga that capped a clinical chase. Tuskers, who had resumed on 109 for eight overnight, managed to stretch their second-innings total to 167, largely due to a determined 45 from Ernest Masuku, supported by 33 from Tanatswa Bechani. Roy Kaia was the pick of the Rocks bowlers with three for 31 from 22 tidy overs. That left Rocks needing 201 for victory. They made a solid start through an opening stand of 69 between Matthew Campbell (35) and Panashe Taruvinga (34). Rocks were 79 for three after Roy Kaia fell for five, but a disciplined 65-run partnership between Johnathan Campbell (41) and a notably restrained Cephas Zhuwao (27 off 67), who came in for Innocent Kaia after he was injured fielding at short leg, steadied the innings. With the platform built, Tsiga finished off the job, guiding Rocks home with an assured 35 not out from 43 balls as they sealed the win without much difficulty. Ainsley Ndlovu returned the best figures for Tuskers, taking three for 40. ********************************************************* Rhinos – 274 and 254-8 declared in 69.4 overs (Nyasha Mayavo 92, Villan Changa 32, Victor Chirwa 29; Alex Falao 3/49, Ryan Simbi 2/77, Faraz Akram 1/25) Eagles – 155 and 226-3 in 73.4 overs (Rodney Mupfudza 93, Craig Ervine 59*, Kudzai Maunze 43; Trevor Gwandu 2/38, Antum Naqvi 1/57) Match drawn Eagles showed remarkable grit to spoil Rhinos’ push for victory at Kwekwe Sports Club on Wednesday, with gutsy half-centuries from Rodney Mupfudza and Craig Ervine steering them to safety and a hard-earned draw. Rhinos had resumed on 236 for eight and batted briefly in the morning to add another 18 runs before declaring, leaving Eagles a daunting 374 for victory. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe gave the chase a lively start with 22 off 25 balls, before the match settled into a battle of attrition. His opening partner Kudzai Maunze contributed a solid 43, but it was the third-wicket stand between Mupfudza and Ervine that halted Rhinos’ momentum – the pair adding 142 with disciplined and resolute batting. Mupfudza looked set for what would have been his maiden first-class century before he was caught at the wicket off Trevor Gwandu for 93, an innings that lasted 193 balls and included 12 fours. With time running out and the result no longer in doubt, Eagles closed on 226 for three, Ervine unbeaten on a composed 59. Gwandu was the pick of the Rhinos bowlers, taking two for 38 in an impressive spell. Subscribe to Blog via Email
