Robin Hood review: Sean Bean series sees newcomer rightfully steal the spotlight

Robin Hood has started airing weekly on MGM+ and the latest adaptation tells the title character's story from a new perspective. Set in the early days before Rob of Loxley secured his infamous moniker, the series tells of his devastating losses and complex love stories. While the Robin Hood series stars some household names, like Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham and Connie Nielsen as Eleanor of Aquitaine, it is newcomer Jack Patten who steals the show alongside his co-star Lauren McQueen as Marian. The title character is Australian actor Jack Patten's first major TV role, with the star having only previously appeared in an episode of NCIS: Sydney. Yet his performance in the MGM+ series would suggest he has a decades-long list of credits behind him. Despite only graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney in 2023, his dedication to the role is unparalleled. Performing a large number of his own stunts, his commitment to bringing out the best in such an iconic character has been noted. On a separate note, his co-star Lauren McQueen shines equally as bright as Maid Marian, as the character's harrowing backstory and family history is explored in more detail. The pair's chemistry is undeniable, and they are utterly convincing as tortured lovers, ripped apart by family politics. An emotionally challenging role, McQueen masterfully captures how Marian is torn between her family and her own heart as she contends with her vicious father, the Earl of Huntingdon (Steven Waddington). Sean Bean naturally captivates all in his complex role as the sheriff - a refreshing change from other adaptations which portray the character as the archenemy. Yet he is by no means the standout star of the show, with many contenders standing out, including Angus Castle-Doughty as Friar Tuck. As for the pace of the series, the adventure is easy to follow, with 10 episodes airing weekly until the finale on December 28. Each episode has equal measures of action and drama, and not a single moment has been wasted. The series is worthy of a primetime linear TV slot. There has been no word on the show's future, but it is off to a promising start. Robin Hood airs weekly on MGM
